Sculptra – An effective treatment for facial contouring & volumising
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a new product which has been specially developed to help the body to “fill-in” the lines, wrinkles and depressions which develop naturally over the years. Sculptra’s active ingredient is a polyl-L-lactic acid, which helps to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen within the line or wrinkle, making the skin appear smoother and firmer.
Which areas can be treated with Sculptra?
Sculptra can be used for a number of areas on the face:
- Deep folds between the nose and the mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Folds around the corners of the mouth (marionette lines)
- Sunken cheeks
- Wrinkling in the cheeks or chin
- Deep scars
Sculptra is a discreet approach which allows a gradual effect to occur. Usually 2 or 3 treatments are required and natural-looking effects should become noticeable after approximately six weeks. Sculptra generally lasts for between 12 and 36 months and is commonly used for facial contouring/volumising to increase volume to the cheek and jowl area.
How is Sculptra different?
There are a number of choices available to you when you are deciding on treatment. Other dermal fillers, such as Restylane or Juvederm, often work by replacing the lost Hyaluronic acid in the skin which works to increase volume. Sculptra works by stimulating the bodies own production of collagen to replenish your skin, which can help to provide more natural and longer lasting results.
What will happen after treatment?
Our practitioner will give you some special aftercare instructions. These include massaging the treated areas on your face during the first five days after treatment. All you need to do is massage the area for five minutes, five times a day.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effect with the use of Sculptra includes bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising or swelling at the site of injection. These side effects generally resolve in 2-6 days. One possible delayed side effect with Sculptra can be small bumps under the skin in the treated area. They won’t always be visible but you may notice them only when you press in the treated area. These bumps tend to occur within the first 6-12 months after the first treatment. Occasionally these bumps can go away on their own. Visible bumps, sometimes associated with redness or colour change to the treated area, have also been reported. As with all procedures that involve an injection through the skin, there is risk of infection. If you experience any side-effect with your treatment then you should contact us.
Are the results from Sculptra immediate?
At your first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra worked immediately because of the swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute Sculptra. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water gets absorbed by your body you may look as you did prior to treatment. Sculptra takes time to work as it’s designed to stimulate the bodies natural production of collagen, but results should begin to be noticeable after approximately six weeks. You may wish to come for a review at this point and top up treatments may be necessary in order to obtain the required results. However, in contrast to some other treatments which require refresher sessions, after the end of your Sculptra programme the results can last for more than 2-3 years, depending on your age, the condition of your skin and the type of procedure used.
Does it hurt?
As with all injections you may feel some pain and discomfort. You may also notice a brief burning sensation at the injection site and a local anaesthetic and cooling may be given in some instances to increase your comfort.
How much does it cost?
Our Sculptra prices are extremely competitive and are charged based on the amount of product used. It will typically take 2-3 sessions to achieve the best results for you.
You will also need a consultation before you start your treatment so that we can assess your suitability for Sculptra and to determine how much product to use. If you decide that you would like to go ahead with the treatment then please be aware that a non-refundable deposit is required prior to each treatment. This is because Sculptra needs to be mixed 1-2 days before it is injected (unlike Botox and other Dermal Fillers which can be prepared at the time of your appointment), and will expire very quickly once mixed (i.e. cannot usually be used for another patient).
